DATA RECORDERS
xoserve uses data recorders to develop annual profiles of gas consumption,
which are an essential part of the bills that gas transporters send to
gas shippers for their usage of the pipeline. The raw data is totally
confidential to xoserve and is not shared with gas shippers, suppliers
or any other third party.
Data recording devices are attached to gas meters, which incorporate a
low frequency pulse output mechanism. Gas consumption data is then saved
to the device memory in a binary format. The devices are battery driven
(using a lithium type battery). They do not communicate with any other
remote site or unit, but have to be physically read by a person periodically
visiting the premises to download the data on to a hand-held apparatus.
They are normally set up to capture daily consumption data. Currently
data is being gathered from approximately 4,300 gas consumers across mainland
Britain using these recording devices.
This equipment is installed, maintained and managed on behalf of xoserve
by a company called Mouchel (formally Mouchel Parkman).
Their operatives normally visit these sites twice a year in spring and
autumn to download data, although occasionally for maintenance purposes
a further visit may be needed. The lithium battery needs to be exchanged
every four years, otherwise the stored data will be lost.
