The most significant topic that was identified through the Project Nexus
Consultation was the potential implications of Smart Metering – giving the
opportunity in the long term to amend UNC processes to take advantage of the
massively increased availability of meter readings, but also introducing uncertainty
as the industry framework and responsibilities to support Smart metering rollout
need to be defined. Opportunities to amend UNC rules are being considered
under UNC governance, but a number of matters that could potentially be influenced
or informed by changes in industry responsibilities have been put ‘on hold’
pending output from the DECC/Ofgem led Smart Metering Implementation Programme
(the SMIP).
The most significant potential output from the SMIP relates to the scope of
the Central Comms Provider (CCP), which has a potential impact on the scope
of the GT Agent’s services and therefore could have an impact on the scope
of Project Nexus. The SMIP prospectus is expected to inform the next steps.
