Transforming Together
Our annual Stakeholder Engagement Day provides an important opportunity to listen, collaborate and work together to help shape the future direction of the organisation and the wider gas sector. Under the theme “Transforming Together”, the event, held at our office in Solihull, brought together voices from across the gas industry to discuss the challenges and opportunities shaping the sector’s future. Through a series of presentations, workshops and panel discussion, attendees explored how the industry can continue delivering for customers today while preparing for the opportunities and challenges of tomorrow.
While discussions covered everything from service delivery and digitalisation to governance, data and decarbonisation, one message came through clearly throughout the day: delivering excellent core services remains Xoserve’s number one priority.
Delivering today while preparing for tomorrow
Opening the event, CEO Steve Brittan reinforced the critical role Xoserve plays in supporting the smooth running of the gas market and the importance of maintaining services that are effective, reliable and secure.
As Great Britain’s Central Data Services Provider (CDSP), Xoserve sits at the heart of the gas market, delivering the systems and services that support billing, settlement, balancing and network operations across the industry. Stakeholders recognised the importance of maintaining operational excellence while continuing to improve customer experience and service performance.
Attendees heard about progress made through the CDSP Service Enhancement Programme, which is helping strengthen service resilience, improve testing and assurance capabilities, and enhance overall customer experience.
The discussion reinforced a key point: while innovation remains important, maintaining and continuously improving today’s services must remain the foundation for future progress.
Transforming the foundations of the gas market
Alongside operational excellence, the event explored how the gas sector can prepare for the challenges and opportunities ahead.
Project Trident featured prominently throughout the day. The project will modernise the UK Link system, which is essential to the successful competitive retail gas market in Britain, and present opportunities to make service delivery more efficient and economical.
Stakeholders heard how the project is taking a collaborative approach with customers and will continue this approach as it tests future plans. Artificial intelligence, digitalisation and future system flexibility were also recurring themes, with discussion focused on how new technologies can improve efficiency, support decision-making and help deliver change more effectively.
Gas, green gases and the energy transition
A panel discussion, joined by the experts from DESNZ, Future Energy Networks, NESO and the Green Gas Certificate Scheme, moderated by Steve Brittan, Xoserve’s CEO, explored the future role of gas within the UK’s evolving energy system.
While perspectives differed on the pace and pathways of transition, there was broad agreement that gas will continue to play an important role in supporting energy security, flexibility and affordability for many years to come. The discussion focused not on whether gas has a future, but on how the sector can accelerate the transition towards lower-carbon alternatives and ensure market arrangements are ready to support them.
Biomethane emerged as a particular area of interest, with stakeholders highlighting examples from across Europe where supportive policy frameworks have helped drive rapid adoption and investment.
Hydrogen and carbon capture and storage (CCS) were also recognised as important components of future energy scenarios. While large-scale deployment may still be some way off, attendees agreed that the industry must continue preparing for a range of potential pathways as policy and market requirements evolve.
From data provider to data expert
A key theme to emerge from the day was the growing importance of data.
Throughout workshops and discussions, stakeholders challenged the industry to think beyond simply managing data and focus instead on how data can be transformed into actionable insight.
Participants highlighted the increasing value of trusted, accessible and interoperable data in supporting decision-making, planning and collaboration across the wider energy system. As gas, electricity and storage become increasingly interconnected, data will play a critical role in helping industry, regulators and policymakers navigate the transition ahead.
A recurring observation was that Xoserve has an opportunity to be recognised not only as a gas expert, but as a trusted data expert - helping unlock the value of industry data for the benefit of customers, consumers and wider society.
This ambition aligns closely with Xoserve’s long-term vision and its commitment to supporting the sector’s digitalisation journey.
Collaboration at the heart of delivery
Whether discussing major programmes such as Project Trident, Code Reform, future governance arrangements or service enhancements, stakeholders consistently highlighted the value of involving industry early, maintaining open communication and creating opportunities for meaningful engagement.
Attendees also reflected positively on the increased dialogue taking place across the industry, noting that regular engagement, stakeholder forums and targeted communications have helped improve transparency and strengthen relationships.
The event reinforced a simple but important point: the future of the gas sector will be shaped through partnership.
By continuing to work closely with customers, industry participants, regulators and delivery partners, Xoserve can help ensure today’s market remains resilient while supporting the innovation, collaboration and insight needed to prepare for tomorrow.
